Hillel Alexandrov

1850–1935

Hillel Alexandrov graduated from St. Petersburg University. Best known as a regional historian of Jewish Minsk and other Belorussian towns and shtetls, he published Research Your Shtetl in 1928 as a guide to Jewish regional ethnography and a justification of shtetl ethnography as instrumental for Sovietization. After 1933, the Stalinist regime restricted Alexandrov’s scholarship. He taught in Minsk and Leningrad.
