Helen Suzman

1917–2009

Born in South Africa to Lithuanian parents, Helen Suzman taught economics at Witwatersrand University and then became a member of the South African parliament. Campaigning for a peaceful overthrow of the apartheid regime, Suzman received the United Nations Human Rights award in 1978.
