Ḥayim Yom-Tob Magula

ca. 1690–ca. 1758

Ḥayim Yom-Tob Magula lived in Izmir (Smyrna), where he was the ḥazan at the Algazi Synagogue. Magula is known for his Ladino moralizing coplas (verses), some of which were published in Tokhaḥat megula (The Admonition of Magula; Smyrna, 1739). The author criticizes the leaders and rich members of the community for their lack of piety and lack of compassion for the poor and needy.
