Gus Schuettler

1933–2012

Born Guenter Schuettler in Kassel, Germany, Gus Schuettler lived in Germany through World War II. He immigrated to the United States and joined the military in the late 1950s. An editor from the army newspaper Stars and Stripes saw some of his photographs and immediately hired Schuettler as a staff photographer. Schuettler’s photographic style was direct documentary reportage. His career as a military news photographer stretched from the Korean War to the Gulf War. In addition to war images, he captured portraits of some of the best-known personalities of his time.
