Gostling & Morris

Comprised of British architects David E. Gostling and James Morris, the firm Gostling & Morris was active in Bombay (Mumbai) in the late nineteenth century. They designed important buildings such as the Keneseth Eliyahoo synagogue, the Times of India building, and various residential houses and civic offices.

Synagogues built in Europe in the age of Emancipation had somewhat contradictory goals. On the one hand, they were to articulate a proud Jewishness, which by definition meant a distinctive style. On the other hand, they wanted to announce that they were deeply embedded in the European cityscape.
