Gonda Redlich
1916–1944
Egon (also known as Gonda) Redlich was born in the Moravian city of Olmütz (now Olomouc, Czech Republic); when his law studies were interrupted by the Nazi occupation in 1939, he became a teacher in Prague. In December 1941, he was deported to Terezín, where he became head of the Youth Services Department. Redlich kept a diary in Czech and Hebrew detailing life in Terezín. Before his deportation to Auschwitz with his wife and son in 1944, he concealed his diary in an attic, where it remained until discovered by Czech workers in 1967.
