Levi, 1814–1874; Pontremoli, 1818–1888
Giuseppe Levi and Esdra Pontremoli were the editors of L’educatore Israelita: Giornale di letture per le famiglie israelitiche (The Israelite Educator: Newspaper of Readings for Jewish Families), the first Italian Jewish monthly periodical, founded in 1853, distributed widely across the emerging nation, and published in fifty volumes. As Italy was formed over the course of the century, Levi and Pontremoli, both rabbis, held out hope that the nascent nation would offer new opportunities and recognition of Italian Jews. The newspaper changed its name upon Levi's death, and continued publication until 1922.
