Georg Kreisler

1922–2011

Georg Kreisler—writer, actor, entertainer, and composer of satirical songs—was born in Austria to a middle-class family. He escaped Austria in 1938, fleeing to Hollywood. Kreisler spent part of World War II as an American army interpreter and entertainer in Europe. Following the war, he worked on movies with Charlie Chaplin and earned a living performing at nightclubs. In 1955, he returned to Europe, living in Vienna, and later Munich, Berlin, Basel, and Salzburg.
