Gedalyahu Alon
1901–1950
Historian Gedalyahu Alon (born Rogoznitski) was born in 1901 in Kobryn, Belorussia, and studied at the Slobodka yeshiva. In 1926, he immigrated to Palestine and was one of the first graduates of the Hebrew University. He taught Talmud and Jewish history there, clarifying many problems in the development of halakhah and the evolution of the social history of the Jews. In 1953, he was posthumously awarded the first Israel Prize for Jewish studies.
