Fabius Mieses
1824–1898
Fabius Mieses, a poet, writer, and scholar of philosophy born in Brody, Galicia, was exposed to the Haskalah as a youth and studied Hebrew literature. In 1840, he moved to Kraków, where he taught himself several languages as well as mathematics and astronomy. Returning to Brody and then living in Breslau and Leipzig, he wrote for Hebrew and German periodicals, including Ha-melits in which his Milḥemet ha-dat was published. His Korot ha-filosofyah ha-ḥadashah (History of Modern Philosophy) dealt with German philosophers; he also wrote poetry, including a piece on Darwin.
