Esther Lurie
1913–1998
Esther Lurie was a Latvian-born artist who extensively documented her experiences during the Holocaust in the visual arts and in literature. Lurie studied set design and drawing in Belgium before immigrating to Palestine in 1934. In 1941, while exhibiting her work in Lithuania, Lurie was imprisoned in the Kovno ghetto; she was later moved to the Stutthof concentration camp. During the war, Lurie produced hundreds of drawings in secret, creating portraits of fellow Jewish prisoners. She moved back to Palestine in 1945 and settled in Tel Aviv.
