Eliezer Soesman (Zusman) Rudelsum

d. 1780

Eliezer Soesman (Zusman) Rudelsum was a prominent member of the Ashkenazi intellectual elite of Amsterdam who frequently interacted with Christian interlocuters about religious ideals. He taught Hebrew to Christian students in the city, eventually publishing in 1747 a Hebrew grammar and Dutch-Hebrew dictionary for pedagogical use. In addition, he translated Isaac Aboab’s Menorat ha-ma’or (The Lamp of Light) into Dutch for a Christian readership. He also engaged in publishing activities with his brother-in-law, Menaḥem Man Amelander, including printing a copy of the Hebrew Bible in Yiddish, with Rashi's commentary (1725); editing a Yiddish translation of Sefer ha-magid, a Yiddish Bible translation by Jacob ben R. Jitschak Ashkenaz (1738); and writing a Yiddish catechism textbook, Miqra meforash (Scriptures Explained, 1749).
