Elfriede Jelinek

b. 1946

Austrian novelist and playwright Elfriede Jelinek is considered one of her country’s most talented and outspoken writers. A feminist and social critic whose work often addresses female sexuality and abuse, she received the 2004 Nobel Prize in Literature for her body of work, which encompasses many novels and plays as well as translations. Jelinek received the Franz Kafka Prize, among other literary prizes.
