Djamilé Douec

Late 19th Century–after 1929

Very little is known about Djamilé Douec (Dweck). Judging by her name at birth, Douec was likely from Ottoman Syria or nominally Ottoman Egypt. From 1900 to 1905, she taught in an Alliance Israélite Universelle (AIU) girls’ school in Baghdad. Afterwards, Douec held several teaching posts in the vast AIU school network: in Aleppo from 1905 to 1908; in Tanta, Egypt, from 1908 to 1911; and in Rabat from 1911 to 1913, where she seems to have lived through the 1920s. At some point she married and took the surname Benatar.
