Daniel Neufeld

1814–1874

An educator who was born in Praszka, Poland, and attended a Catholic secondary school, Daniel Neufeld advocated for reform in the language, dress, and customs of Polish Jews. As a Polish patriot, he was affiliated with the Polish-language Jewish newspaper Jutrzenka and was sent into exile in Russia for his views. Although not sympathetic to Hasidism, he argued for gentle persuasion toward modernity. In addition to writing biblical commentary and translating Hebrew prayer books into Polish, he wrote poetry in both languages.
