Blanche Bendahan

1903–1975

A poet and novelist, Blanche Bendahan was born in Oran, Algeria, to a family of Spanish descent. She was raised and educated in France and published her first anthology of poems, La voile sur l’eau in 1926. Her highly-regarded novel Mazaltob (1930) portrays a woman struggling with traditional Moroccan family values in the face of modern French influences.
