Bernice Rubens
1928–2004
Novelist Bernice Rubens was born in Cardiff, Wales, to an Orthodox family of Lithuanian and Polish immigrants. At age thirty-five, she published her first novel, Set on Edge. Her works focus on the experiences of Jewish families, exploring the terror and trauma that lurks beneath the surface of domestic scenes. In 1970, she became the first woman to win the Man Booker Prize, for The Elected Member. Two of her novels, I Sent a Letter to My Love (1975) and Madame Soustazka (1962), were adapted into films.
