Bernardo Verbitsky

1907–1979

Born in Buenos Aires into a family that had emigrated from Russia, Bernardo Verbitsky was raised in an impoverished home. Nonetheless, he studied to be a physician, a field that he later abandoned to become a journalist, novelist, and film writer. His socially conscious writings candidly explore the underside of urban living in Argentina. His own background appears in his autobiographical novel, Hermana y sombra (Sister and Shadow).
