Benjamin Harshav
1928–2015
Benjamin Harshav (Hrushovski) was born in Vilna and spent the war years in the Soviet Union. He then lived in Poland, Germany, and Israel, where he joined the Palmach and studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He later founded the department of poetics and comparative literature at Tel Aviv University. As Professor of Hebrew literature at Yale University, Harshav published numerous works on Yiddish and Hebrew arts and culture, as well as on poetic theory.
