Barukh Ha-Levi Epstein

1860–1941

Barukh Ha-Levi Epstein was raised in Novarodik (Nowogrodek [Polish]; today, Navahrudak, Belarus), the son of the rabbi and scholar Yekhiel Mikhl Epstein (1830–1908). He studied in the Volozhyn yeshiva, wrote on Hebrew grammar, and is best known for his biblical and Talmudic commentaries, as well as his memoir, Mekor Barukh. The memoir provides one of the only sources for the life and thought of Rayna Batya Berlin, his aunt and the granddaughter of the founder of the Volozhyn yeshiva.
