Barney Simon

1932–1995

Born in South Africa, Barney Simon was a London-trained playwright who risked condemnation under apartheid when he returned to South Africa and staged multiracial plays. He was a founder of Johannesburg’s Market Theatre in 1976, and worked as its artistic director until his death. Simon was also an editor and short-story writer.
