Avraam Papo

1865–1923

Born in Ottoman Rusçuk (today Ruse, Bulgaria), Yosef Avraam Papo was a maskilic autodidact. He contributed to the Bulgarian Zionist Ladino-language newspaper Ha-Shofar and translated several plays from Hebrew into Ladino. Papo translated European tragedies on biblical subjects and produced plays of his own, such as Naboth’s Vineyard, which replicates the structure of a French classicist tragedy.
