Anshel Levi

16th Century

Anshel Levi was born in Germany and later moved to Italy. His personal testimony states that he worked as a scribe and teacher and suffered from poverty. Levi’s writings reveal that he was an educated and learned person. His Midrash le-pirke avot (Midrash on the Sayings of the Fathers), a Yiddish commentary on m. Avot, was written in 1579 for a female patron named Perl.
