Anna Rozental

Bundist leader Anna Rozental was born into a wealthy family in Volkovisk, Belarus, and raised at her family’s rural estate, where she became conscious of class differences. She trained and worked as a dentist and grew increasingly politically active. Arrested for her Bundist activities, Rozental was exiled to Siberia in 1902 and returned to Vilna after the Russian revolution. In 1917, she became secretary of the Bund Central Committee, and also lived in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Kiev. Rozental promoted day care and Yiddish schools and was elected to the Vilna City Council. Arrested when the Soviets entered that city, she died in prison.
