Anania Coen
1750–1834
Graziado Vita Anania Coen was born in Reggio nell’Emilia, a northern Italian town with a long history of notable rabbis and scholars, and Coen himself established a rabbinical school there. Besides his theological work, he published several treatises on the nature of the Hebrew language and Hebrew poetry, in addition to his own collections of poems. He also established the first Hebrew printing press in Florence, and became chief rabbi of this city in 1825, a position he held until his death.
