Abraham ha-Levi Horowitz

ca. 1550–1615

Abraham ha-Levi ben Shabbetai Sheftel Horowitz was scion of a prominent Prague Jewish family and father of, among others, Isaiah Horowitz, the author of Shene luḥot ha-brit (Two Tablets of the Covenant), and Jacob Horowitz. Abraham studied in his birthplace, Prague, in the Kraków yeshiva of Moses Isserles (the Rema), and in Poznań. He eventually served as rabbi in Lvov (Lemberg). In early adulthood, Abraham was a zealous proponent of the Maimonidean ideal of including scientific learning alongside Torah study. Later he moderated his views. His ethical will, Yesh noḥalin (Some Inherit; see b. Bava Batra 108a), provides moral guidance to his children. Later editions of this text were printed with glosses and additions by Horowitz’s son, Jacob, and his grandson, Shabbetai Sheftel ben Isaiah.
