What, actually, am I doing here?

I owe myself, and perhaps others, an answer to this question. What, actually, am I doing here? Why do I go on a clear morning to Levinsky, why in zigzags, stopping here, inhaling there, and why am I telling myself and everyone else about this?

Well, the reason is simple: I am searching for roots.

It sounds strange…

Amos Kenan

1927–2009

Born in Tel Aviv, author, playwright, and sculptor Amos Kenan joined the Leḥi underground and fought in Israel’s War of Independence. In the early 1950s, he wrote a satirical column for the newspaper Haaretz. He lived for a few years in Paris, later returning to Israel where he was a long-time columnist for the newspaper Yediot Aḥaronot. A peace activist, Kenan won the Brenner Prize for Literature in 2000.
