And veins web her temples,

and my father pins on the orchid,

and my card names her the best mother.

But Alzheimer’s or arteriosclerosis (the end is the same)

praises him ad nauseum,

but accuses my absence, my silence.

And if he leaves she calls me Monas,

or if the nurse asks: Is this Hugh?

she only says: Hugh is Hugh.

Nor can she think where…

Hugh Seidman

b. 1940

Hugh Seidman is a Brooklyn-born poet who has taught writing at a number of universities, including The New School. Seidman has received the 2004 Green Rose Prize, the Yale Series of Younger Poets Prize, and three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts.
